The Georgia roster and coaching staff has begun to take shape for the 2024 season. Below you can find live updates on the latest transfer portal, NFL draft and coaching decisions.
The coaching carousel has already begun, as the Bulldogs saw Fran Brown take the Syracuse head coaching job. Meanwhile, the transfer portal opens officially on Dec. 4.
Georgia football 2024 roster tracker: Live updates
3:15 p.m. ET, Dec. 4: Three more Bulldogs have entered the transfer portal in offensive tackle Austin Blaske, wide receiver Jackson Meeks and edge rusher CJ Madden have all entered the portal.
Blaske figures to have plenty of suitors, given he’ll have two years of eligibility left and is a capable offensive tackle. Meeks drew rave reviews in his time at Georgia as a special teams player, though had only 1 catch for 23 yards this season. Both players have two years of eligibility remaining.
The departure of Madden puts Georgia in a tight spot at outside linebacker. The Bulldogs have just four edge rushers on scholarship, though Georgia could get creative. Gabe Harris could move back after playing on the defensive line or Jalon Walker could play at outside linebacker full-time. He’s been a pass rusher for Georgia and had a team-best 5.0 sacks this season for the Bulldogs.
Chaz Chambliss, Marvin Jones Jr., Damon Wilson and Sam M’Pemba are all expected to return next season for Georgia at the position.
So far, Georgia has seen six players enter the transfer portal, with five of them entering today. Quarterback Brock Vandagriff was the biggest name so far. Players have until Jan. 4 to enter the portal.
1:45 p.m. ET, Dec. 4: A big domino has fallen in the Georgia quarterback room, as Brock Vandagriff has entered the transfer portal.
“Dawg Nation, Thank you for the unwavering support over the past 3 years. I was able to accomplish a huge goal of mine which is graduating from the University of Georgia,” Vandagriff wrote. “I would like to thank my teammates, coaches, trainers, EQ staff, and professors for helping to shape me into the man I am today. The friendships and relationships built over the past 3 years have played a huge role in my life and will continue to do down the road.
“I will be entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer with two years of eligibility.”
Vandagriff will have two years remaining at whatever his new school is. As a back-up to Carson Beck this year, Vandagriff completed 12 of his 18 pass attempts for 165 yards and 2 touchdowns. Vandagriff is set to graduate from Georgia in December.
This move though might say a lot more about the future of the Georgia quarterback room.
Beck actually also has two years of eligibility remaining despite being a year older than Vandagriff. Beck started all 13 games for Georgia this season and for the most part, looked like a top-tier quarterback.
Beck will have a decision to make regarding his future, as he is draft-eligible. It is a crowded quarterback market this year with players such as Caleb Williams and Drake Maye available. And unlike this year, there isn’t an obvious candidate as to who will be the top quarterback in the 2025 draft cycle. With another year of development, Beck could become that guy.
The Georgia offense will look different next year, with Beck expected to lose four starters on the offensive line, his top two running backs in Kendall Milton and Daijun Edwards, tight end Brock Bowers and wide receivers Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint and Ladd McConkey.
Expect Georgia to use the transfer portal to re-tool at the wide receiver position and possibly at running back. While Georgia will have to replace some key starters on the offensive line, it does have players such as Dylan Fairchild, Micah Morris and Monroe Freeling waiting in the wings.
Further down the depth chart, Georgia has Gunner Stockton. He just completed his second year in the program. He appeared in three games this season, and completed 6 of his 9 pass attempts for 52 yards and an interception. He has three years of eligibility remaining and would seem to have a clear path to being the back-up next year in the event Beck returns. If Beck were to go pro, Stockton would be seen as a candidate to start.
Georgia is set to bring in two talented quarterback prospects in this recruiting class, as Dylan Raiola and Ryan Puglisi are set to sign later this month. Both players will enroll early and are expected to arrive on campus on Dec. 16.
Both provide depth at the position, though expecting either one to come in and start would be a bit much in the event that Beck leaves.
Players have until Jan. 15 to make a decision regarding their NFL future. Georgia’s game against Florida State is set for Dec. 30.
12 p.m. ET, Dec. 4: Two more names to know have entered the transfer portal at two different positions.
At wide receiver, Ohio State wide receiver Julian Fleming has put his name in the transfer portal. Fleming has just one year of eligibility left as he was a 2020 recruit and saw a dip in numbers this past season for the Buckeyes as he caught 26 passes for 270 yards. He was a Georgia recruiting target back when he was the No. 1 overall wide receiver in the 2020 class and did play against Georgia in the 2022 Peach Bowl. He caught 5 passes for 71 yards against the Bulldogs.
On the defensive side of the ball, Arizona State defensive lineman BJ Green put his name in the portal. Green had 6.0 sacks for the Sun Devils this past season and 13.5 over his college career. While he has only one year of eligibility remaining, he was high school teammates with Brock Vandagriff at Prince Avenue Chrisitan in Bogart, Ga.
Wide receiver and defensive line are Georgia’s two biggest positions of need in the transfer portal. We’ll see how active and quickly Georgia moves to add at those positions.
One note on the coaching front, Fran Brown will not be with Georgia for the Orange Bowl. He will get a start on his new job as Syracuse’s head coach.
9:30 a.m. ET, Dec. 4: It has already been a newsy morning on the Georgia front, as the Bulldogs saw defensive lineman Jonathan Jefferson enter the transfer portal.
The move itself isn’t all that surprising, given Jefferson played only seven games this year on a defensive line that wasn’t as deep as previous iterations.
What the Jefferson move does probably indicate though is the importance of bringing in defensive linemen via the transfer portal. Georgia has four defensive linemen who are seniors and could go pro. While Georgia does have six commitments from defensive line prospects in the 2024 recruiting cycle, but the Bulldogs likely won’t want to rely on that much youth.
One big name that already entered the portal was Texas A&M defensive line Walter Nolen. There will be other names worth watching as Georgia tries to bulk up its defensive line. Georgia is likely to bring back the likes of Mykel Williams, Christen Miller, Jordan Hall and Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins.
On the coaching front, Georgia did see former assistant Matt Luke take the offensive line job at Clemson. Luke last coached at Georgia during the 2021 season.
On Monday, Fran Brown will be introduced as the head coach at Syracuse. He is set to hold an introductory press conference on Monday morning.
8:30 a.m. ET, Dec. 4: With the transfer portal officially open, a key name to know for Georgia went into the portal as Vanderbilt wide receiver London Humphreys will look to play elsewhere. Robbie Weinstein of 247Sports was the first to report the move.
Georgia fans should be familiar with Humphreys. The freshman receiver caught 22 passes for 439 yards and 4 touchdowns for Vanderbilt this year. Against Georgia, Humphreys caught 2 passes for 51 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown.
Humphreys will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Wide receiver figures to be one of the top positions of interest for Georgia in the transfer portal. The Bulldogs are expected to see multiple departures from the position, be it to the NFL or transfer portal. The Bulldogs also have only two wide receiver commitments in the 2024 recruiting class in Nitro Tuggle and Sacovie White.
Georgia has experience with wide receivers in the transfer portal, as it landed Dominic Lovett and Rara Thomas last offseason. Lovett caught 51 passes for 575 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Thomas finished with 23 receptions for 383 yards and a touchdown.
Like Humphries, Thomas and Lovett both had SEC experience prior to coming to Georgia.
Other positions to know with regards to Georgia and the transfer portal include defensive line, safety and potentially running back. The transfer portal opens on Monday and closes on Jan. 2.
9:45 p.m. ET, Dec 3: One of the bigger bodies went into the transfer portal on Sunday night, as Texas A&M defensive lineman Walter Nolen entered the transfer portal.
The portal officially opens on Monday, as teams can begin to contact players in the portal. With someone like Nolan, you can imagine a lot of teams will line up for his services.
Nolen was the No. 1 overall player in the 2022 recruiting class. He had 37 tackles this season, 8.5 of which went for a loss and 4.0 sacks. Nolen has two years of eligibility remaining, though he fits the profile of someone who might be one-and-done.
Given the need Georgia has on the defensive line, you can imagine the Bulldogs will certainly inquire about Nolen’s services. Georgia has four seniors on the defensive line, and as Saturday showed, a real need at the position.
Georgia did have four defensive linemen taken in the first round of the past two NFL drafts. Kirby Smart has to hope that will help entice someone like Nolen.
As for how Smart will handle his own portal players, Smart shared his thoughts on that on Sunday.
“We’ll have guys go into the portal, guys looking for their future, it’s bright for them maybe at other places,” Smart said. “That’s what the portal is for.”
Georgia took three players out of the transfer portal last offseason, with all of them coming from SEC programs. One of those was Texas A&M defensive back Smoke Bouie, though he ended up parting ways with the Georgia program before playing for the Bulldogs.
9:15 a.m. ET, Nov. 30: Fran Brown was a key reason the Georgia Bulldogs have the No. 1 ranked recruiting class for the 2024 cycle. With Brown taking the Syracuse head coaching job, it’s always far to wonder whether or not some of his top targets will end up sticking, or if they’ll look elsewhere.
But so far, the players that committed to Brown are sticking with Georgia.
The latest to indicate his commitment is rock solid is defensive line prospect Jordan Thomas. Georgia landed the 4-star New Jersey defensive end back in June. Brown is an elite recruiter in the Garden State, given his long-time ties to the state.
On Thursday morning though, Thomas indicated he’s all-Dawg.
